A goodbye to South End and getting to know Camp North End: CharlotteFive’s top 5 development stories from 2017

Development in Charlotte saw quite a bit of growth this year and 2018 seems set to continue that trend. As we look back at the year that was, here are our top five development stories from 2017.

(1) 8 things you need to know about Camp North End, the huge development north of Uptown

Extra info: After the City Council approved this plan in September, former council member and current Mayor Pro Tem Vi Lyles stated some concern about the possible gentrification of this area and questioned how to protect the area’s current residents.

Your thoughts: Some of you agreed there was a noticeable a lack of growth in the Elizabeth area, in the comments, citing an expanding CPCC campus and the amount of land controlled by Novant Health.

Extra info: While we are still waiting on the return of Common Market, South End has been busy this year. Zeppelin is getting set to open on Jan. 5, Gin Mill moved next door, The Brickyard replaced it, and the area got some more Korean BBQ …  Just to name a few things.

(4) The 22 major development questions Charlotte faces in 2018

Your thoughts: In the comment section, some of you thought more questions about a lack of affordable housing also need to be addressed in 2018.

(5) Opinion: Charlotte deserves better than generic, soulless neighborhood names like LoSo

Extra info: York Road, aka LoSo, definitely saw an uptick this year with new openings, including GoodRoad Ciderworks and Queen Park Social.
