Here’s everything we know about Legion Brewing’s new SouthPark location, coming this fall

In November 2017, Legion Brewing announced its plans to open the first brewery in Charlotte’s SouthPark neighborhood.

In the months since Legion’s owners signed the lease for a massive space at the corner of Carnegie Boulevard and Congress Street, they’ve been hard at work designing what the interior and exterior brewery’s new location will actually look like once it opens in fall of 2018.

We stopped by to walk through the soon-to-be brewery with Legion Brewing marketing manager Brittany Smith to talk about what we can expect from the new space.

Here’s what we know about it so far:

The SouthPark taproom will be nearly double the size of Plaza Midwood’s.

Legion Brewing’s existing taproom in Plaza Midwood has a 3,000 sq. ft. taproom, in addition to a mezzanine of about 1,200 sq. ft. overlooking the brewhouse that is often used for events, both private and public.

The SouthPark location, however, will have a downstairs taproom of 4,000 sq. ft. and an upper level taproom of 1,000 sq. ft. Plus, it will feature another 2,000 sq. ft. in private event spaces, including one large room downstairs and one second story mezzanine.

When you walk through the front doors, you’ll be greeted by a grand circular bar with 30 barrel foeders in the center, which will be used to age some of Legion Brewing’s funkiest brews.

There will be 43 total taps, with a handful dedicated to wine—and a full bar featuring local spirits.

Legion Brewing staff will be pouring from 12 different taps at the bar in the second story mezzanine, and a whopping 31 taps at the main bar on the first floor. Several will be dedicated to wine and cider, but the majority will feature Legion-brewed beer (which will continue to be produced in the brewhouse at the Plaza Midwood location).

And non-beer drinkers, rejoice: the SouthPark location will also offer a full bar featuring specialty cocktails made with spirits from local distilleries like Great Wagon Road, Muddy River and more.

Both locations will offer non-alocholic beverages as well, including Cheerwine, Sundrop, Uncle Scott’s Root Beer, kombucha (from both Lenny Boy Brewing Co. and Sumbucha) in bottles.

The SouthPark location will also offer coffee and tea, in case you’re looking for something to warm you up.

There will be an expansive outdoor-patio-slash-beer-garden.

The outdoor space at Legion Brewing’s Plaza Midwood location is comfortably cozy, featuring handcrafted picnic tables and benches, as well as a deck and a fire pit.

The SouthPark location will offer a spacious 2,500 sq. ft. beer garden area lining the outer perimeter of the taproom, where guests can enjoy their drinks as well as their meals.

“We are excited to provide our SouthPark neighbors with a relaxing beer garden to meet up for a drink, a family friendly dining area to enjoy dinner in and private event space options that are suitable for a variety of special occasions,” said Smith.

The lunch, dinner and weekend brunch menus are being designed to complement the beer selection.

If you’ve stopped by for lunch or dinner at Legion’s Plaza Midwood location, you may have sampled some menu items like Juicy Jay Southern Bahn Mi (featuring the brewery’s popular IPA, Juicy Jay) and Dos Amigos Queso Fundido (made with Legion’s Vienna style lager, Dos Amigos). The fare is casual, referred to on Legion’s menu as “Brewery Bites.”

The SouthPark location will have a more robust menu for both lunch and dinner, using locally sourced ingredients and prepared in the location’s new open-concept kitchen, which features an Argentinian grill.

“Folks can expect the same quality of delicious, locally sourced craft beer and warm, welcoming atmosphere that they enjoy in our Plaza Midwood location, but with a twist that is appropriate for the neighborhood,” said Phil Buchy, Legion Brewing co-owner.

And just like in Plaza Midwood, Legion Brewing will plan to offer a weekend brunch menu at its SouthPark location. Let’s hope the Southwest Grit Bowl makes it there.
