The long awaited NoDa Street Market opens this summer
The long awaited NoDa Street Market opens this summer. The two renovated buildings are located on the corner of Craighead, with views of the new Blue Line light rail tracks.
The building closest to Craighead, 3629 N. Davidson St., will house anchor tenant Sherwin Williams and local businesses Crown Station Coffee House & Pub and Deejai Thai. Divine Barrel Brewing and comic book shop Heroes Aren’t Hard to Find will be located in the next building, at 3701 N. Davidson St.
Parking for all shops and an outdoor seating area for Divine Barrel Brewing is in between the two buildings.
According to developer Skye McMahan of Imprint Properties, LLC, and Bird Dog Group, the opening is one year later than planned because of city requirements, permitting and plan review.
They added a patio for Crown Station, and it needed a redesign to be sure that the line of sight for the parking lot met code requirements. Overall, McMahan and his partners’ experience with the city and NoDa’s Neighborhood Business Association was good.
“Everyone sees the benefit of having something like this, where you take an underperforming or non-performing building and turn it into something that can be used by neighbors,” McMahan said. “NoDa is so compact right now with a little district here and on the other side with Amelie’s. We’re trying to spread that out.”
Each tenant is responsible for their own renovations. The tall ceilings, brick walls, roll-up overhead doors, large windows and metal trusses are the perfect backdrop for innovative interiors.
Billy Dail, co-owner of Crown Station, said that their new 2,600-square-foot space will have the same English pub feel that they had in Elizabeth. Magnolia Coffee Co. is developing a signature blend for Crown Station.
“We’re really excited to be in NoDa,” Dail said. “So many music venues have closed within the past couple of years in town and we are glad that we can get another one back open for artists.”
Themed events like comedy, open mic, live music and, of course, Saturday afternoon Appalachian State football games (three Crown Station owners are ASU graduates) will be planned.
“We are looking forward to winning over new customers in the NoDa area. We certainly expect some of our old cronies to come back and see us when we get open,” Dail said.
In the next building (3701 N. Davidson St.), Divine Barrel Brewing will feature a 3,000-square-foot tap room, a climatized barrel room and an outdoor patio area adjacent to the main entrance.
“We love brewing all kinds of beers, from hoppy, to funky, to just plain weird, so expect to find an ever-evolving tap list in our tasting room,” said Ben Dolphens, Divine Barrel Brewing’s head brewer and co-owner. “We’re just really excited to share our passion for beer with Charlotte and to be a part of the awesome beer scene in this city.”
