Nan and Byron’s closed last week. Here’s why

Nan and Byron’s restaurant in South End quietly and permanently closed its doors last week.

The restaurant, run by the same group that operates 5Church in uptown, opened on South Boulevard nearly three years ago. It was sold to another restaurant group, according to 5Church co-owner Alejandro Torio, and it seems likely that it will become a new restaurant concept.

So why did it close? It’s not for lack of business, Torio said.

“Nan and Byron’s profited every quarter it was operated,” he said.

Instead, the group wanted to focus on the three 5Church locations in Charlotte, Charleston and Atlanta.

“We want to be able to focus more on those three restaurants and make sure that they’re excellent,” Torio said. “5Church has some exciting news on the horizon and we look forward to sharing (it) with Charlotte.”

We told you in July it’s looking very likely that 5Church executive chef Jamie Lynch will be on the upcoming season of “Top Chef,” the chef competition show. Could that be part of the exciting news Torio is talking about? We’ll see.
