Today’s headlines: A brand new co-working space is coming to an old building
Charlotte’s hippest new co-working space is in an old-school building.
Level Office Charlotte will have its grand opening Oct. 1 in its renovated 85-year-old building at 227 W. Fourth St. The building, which was a Ford dealership at one point, is already 50 percent leased, Level Office told the Observer’s Ely Portillo.
Some of the amenities:
– Private offices (starting at $349 a month)
– Co-working desks (starting at $199 a month)
– 100 mbps fiber Internet
– An espresso bar
– Lounge areas
– Local beers on tap
Beers on tap probably wouldn’t be good for productivity at the C5 world headquarters.
PINK SLIPS: Wells Fargo is laying off 36 mortgage employees in Fort Mill and Charlotte, part of 182 cuts nationwide. The San Francisco-based lender attributed the cuts to a decline in delinquent home loans, falling foreclosure rates and lower demand from homeowners to refinance mortgages. Wells Fargo employs roughly 23,000 in the Charlotte metropolitan area, its biggest employment hub.
MORE CHICKEN: Bojangles’ will open two new stores next week in Monroe and Concord. Growth in the local market fits with the expansion plans the Charlotte-based chain laid out when it went public this spring. And you can get some freebies during the Monroe opening.

That location, at 303 West Roosevelt Blvd., will be giving away a free sausage biscuit and ice tea on Sept. 18 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. During the official opening on Sept. 21, there will be coupon giveaways, free items including ice tea and kids’ meals, as well as the chance to win free Bojangles’ breakfast for a year.
KUECHLY UPDATE: Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly was back on the practice field Wednesday after suffering a concussion in Sunday’s game against the Jaguars. Kuechly was just an observer during the practice, though, and is still progressing through the concussion protocol. There’s no guarantee he’ll play in Sunday’s home opener, but this still seems like a good sign.

BIKE ACCIDENT: The bicyclist killed earlier this week in a chain-reaction crash was a former homeless man who had just recently moved into housing. Al Gorman, 73, was riding his bike to the laundromat when he was struck and killed Sunday at Parkwood and Hawthorne.
Gorman’s death touched a nerve in Charlotte’s biking community, which held a memorial and vigil in his honor this week. It’s estimated 100 people attended the event and a white “ghost bike” has been placed at the wreck site to remind motorists of his death.
