Today’s headlines: Charlotte Amtrak station to move uptown and renderings of the new Carolina Theatre
After years of talk about an uptown transportation hub, U.S. Transportation Secretary (and ex-Charlotte mayor) Anthony Foxx announced that Charlotte plans to move the Amtrak train station on North Tryon Street to a new location uptown in a few years.
The move will be helped by a $25 million federal grant that the city won earlier this week.
At first, the station near West Trade Street will be pretty basic: a platform, a temporary waiting room and ticketing area (exciting, right?). Eventually, the city hopes to build that bad boy into Gateway Station — a home for Amtrak, inter-city and transit buses, the streetcar and a commuter rail to Lake Norman (assuming such a thing ever actually happens …).
