Park Woodlawn is so hot right now. See the latest development plans for the area

If you thought the rush-hour traffic going south on Park Road was already bad, wait until you see all of the new apartments coming to the area around Park Road Shopping Center.

A developer filed plans for a new mixed-use development at the Pfeiffer University campus on Park Road, near Park Road Shopping Center and Woodlawn Road, according to an Observer story by Ely Portillo.

This is nothing new.

The development is just one of several planned or being built in the area, and Park Road Shopping Center recently had a makeover — on the outside with a new facade and the inside with new tenants moving in and coming soon.

A look at some of the things just opened, coming and planned:

– The most recent development is planned for the Pfeiffer University campus on Park Road. It includes up to 360 apartments and up to 17,000 square feet of retail space in a six-story building. (The school is looking to lease space nearby.)

– Just south of Pfeiffer, an Atlanta-based developer is building a 273-unit luxury apartment building, 5115 Park Place. (It recently started leasing, with rents starting at $999. Luxury, indeed.)

– Grubb Properties and Foothills Capital bought two office buildings on Park Road near Abbey Place and want to rezone the 10.7 acres into a mixed-use development with up to 450 apartments.

– Another developer wants to tear down the Abbey Place apartments across the street and build 265 new apartments and as many as four four-story buildings.

– Two developers want to build townhouse developments in the area, one at East Woodlawn and Halstead and one at Park Road near Hillside.

– Park Road Shopping Center changed ownership back in 2011 and is getting a whole new look, and some new tenants, too: Chopt opened a couple months ago, CO and Juice Bar opened more recently, a J. Crew concept store is coming soon, and two restaurants and a bank are replacing the old Monkey Joe’s.

– Little Sugar Creek Greenway starts behind Park Road Shopping Center and it will eventually extend south as a part of the Cross Charlotte Trail. The plan is to take the greenway under Brandywine, Woodlawn and Park.
