This Charlotte co-working space for creatives is closing — but the restaurant is staying

Glen and Maria Nocik transformed empty space in C3Lab’s building into Alchemy, a 10,000-square-foot entertainment venue that includes The Restaurant at Alchemy, Gallery C3 and The Gathering Common. These spaces will remain open when C3Lab closes.

C3Lab is closing in February to make a transformation from a co-working space to a creative fellowship program. But the attached Alchemy Restaurant and Gallery C3 aren’t leaving South End.

“While this announcement is bittersweet, we are looking forward to beginning this new chapter,” said Glen Nocik, co-founder of C3Lab. “The reimagined C3Lab will better align with its parent (design + build) firm, ACSM, to be an art-focused mentorship program.”

The move: The co-working space at 2525 Distribution St., that has been open almost seven years will close Feb. 28, while ACSM and the fellowship program will relocate to a space in nearby LoSo.

The fellowship: The C3Lab Fellowship Program will guide emerging to mid-career artists with a focus on public art. It launches in late spring 2022 with two artists. More information will be available online in the coming weeks.

The restaurant/gallery: Sister concepts Alchemy Restaurant and Gallery C3 will remain open at 2517 Distribution St. Plans include new exhibitions, collaborations and special events.

The space: “We aren’t sure who will move into the C3Lab space at this time. We have enjoyed a collaborative relationship with the property owners, and if not for their continued support, we would not have been able to do what we’ve done and for how long. We are excited to see who the new tenants will be and what they will bring to the neighborhood,” Nocik said.

“We humbly thank all (C3Lab) members, past and present and the Charlotte community, for the collective support and collaborative spirit we’ve felt. The gratitude we feel is so deep, and we respect everyone for the many lessons learned through this amazing creative venture,” Nocik said. “It was truly the people that made C3Lab a special place. We will miss the buzz of day-to-day life in the C3Lab coworking space but look forward to fostering and nurturing artists in a deeper way.”
