Travel Poems: Flight with mom
Mom wanted me to visit her home. So we would travel.
I could not sleep. So I waited in the dark.
Anticipating the brightness of the airport. Overhearing grown folk talk about tickets.
Our flight leaves at 9. We were ready by 5. Bags packed. Shoes laced. Face washed.
Mom had gifts for her mama. Packed.
Mom wanted me to visit her home. So we would travel.
The security officer named Jason asked, Where to?
I said Mama’s home
He said safe travels. I held her hand tightly.
I took my shoes off. My mom hated removing her shoes.
We would wait for hours until ushered into the plane.
My first flight. My first trip. My first look out the window.
We ate snacks from the apartment. We told stories. I tried my best to not kick chairs.
She kissed my cheek and held my hand
We would land. I would hug her for safety.
Ready for my mama’s home.
