Walmart is remodeling two of its Rock Hill region stores, among 33 statewide
Walmart plans to remodel 33 of its retail stores across South Carolina this year, including its two largest supercenters in York County.
A list of remodels announced Monday includes the Galleria Mall site at 2377 Dave Lyle Blvd. in Rock Hill. It also includes the 1151 Stonecrest Blvd location in Tega Cay.
Walmart has five supercenter sites in York County that combine retail and grocery shopping. Along with the two being remodeled, there’s another supercenter in Rock Hill and one each in Lake Wylie and York.
Walmart also has two Neighborhood Market stores, which are smaller and focused on groceries. There’s one each in Rock Hill and Fort Mill.
Two Lancaster County stores and another in Chester County give Walmart 10 locations across the Rock Hill region.
Stores on the remodel list will get expanded departments with new items and expanded online pickup and delivery, according to a company announcement Monday afternoon. Pharmacies will get wider aisles and private screening areas. Stores also will get new signage and merchandise displays.
Except for one Columbia store, all Walmart locations will remain open during the remodeling, said company spokeswoman Mariel Messier. So will all pharmacies and fuel stations connected to the remodeled stores.
The South Carolina stores are among 650 sites Walmart plans to remodel across the country this year, according to the company. The company didn’t provide a cost for each store remodel, but did say Walmart spent $279 million the past five years to upgrade stores in South Carolina. The company employs more than 36,000 workers across the state.

York County land records show the more than 210,000-square-foot Rock Hill Walmart attached to the Galleria Mall dates back to the mall’s opening in 1991. It’s still owned by companies affiliated with the giant Arkansas-based retailer. The Walmart sits on 17 acres surrounded by the mall.
The Warren Norman Company, a Rock Hill company that initially developed the mall property decades ago, bought the mall six years ago for $11 million.
The mall and the Walmart property there created a turning point for commerce in Rock Hill. Retailers moved from other mall or shop locations downtown, or on Cherry Road, to the new mall on Dave Lyle Boulevard.
The Tega Cay Walmart introduced a similar shift, proving big retailers could thrive outside York County’s biggest city.
The opening of Tega Cay’s Walmart in 2008 was highly debated in what was then a mostly residential and recreational area. Walmart anchored Stonecrest, a shopping destination now filled with restaurants and shops. Walmart’s store in Tega Cay led to similar openings in Lake Wylie and Rock Hill’s Newport area.
Walmart bought the property in Tega Cay from Stonecrest developers in 2006 for $4.1 million. The store is nearly 213,000 square feet.
The three York County supercenters that aren’t being remodeled range from about 152,000 to 184,000 square feet. None of them are as old as the Galleria site.
The York Walmart, built in 1998, is older than the Tega Cay one. The Rock Hill site in Newport was built just after Tega Cay in 2009, followed by the Lake Wylie store in 2010.
