Opera Guild holds vocal competition

Opera Guild of Charlotte holds its 2015 competition Saturday at 11 a.m. in Belk Theater, 130 N. Tryon St.

The free event is open to singers between 20 and 30 who have a permanent residence in North Carolina or are studying voice in the state and intend to pursue an operatic career.

The first-place winner gets $1200 and the chance of a secondary role with Opera Carolina in the next two years. Second place brings $800; third place yields $500; there are two $250 “encouragement awards.”

A three-judge panel picks the winners. Singers choose their first selection, while judges pick the second. For details about the Guild, go to operacarolina.org.
