Cool stuff to do in Charlotte this weekend
Movie
‘Mad Max: Fury Road’
Sat-Sun New in theaters.
Ironically, director George Miller’s “Fury Road” – his first “Mad Max” movie in 30 years – is arguably more about a woman named Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) than it is about a guy named Max (Tom Hardy). But “Mad Imperator Furiosa: Fury Road” probably just didn’t have the same ring to it.
Food
Gut-busting foodstuffs
Sat Levy concessions area on the frontstretch concourse of Charlotte Motor Speedway, 5555 Concord Parkway S., Concord. www.charlottemotorspeedway.com.
If you get hungry before or during the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race, open wide for Candied Bacon Lollipops (225 calories each, $5); the 6.5-pound Crank Shaft Burrito (5,047 calories, $25), packed with baked beans, coleslaw and pulled pork; or the 6-pound Speedway Picnic Burger (6,209 calories, $35). Antacid not included.
Comedy
Bob Saget
Sat 7 and 9:30 p.m. The Comedy Zone, 900 NC Music Factory Blvd. $35-$40. www.cltcomedyzone.com.
The comedian formerly known as Danny Tanner (one of the dads from ’80s/’90s ABC sitcom “Full House”) returns to Charlotte; last time he was here, he told us, he lost a filling while chowing down on a plate of buffalo chicken wings. It’s a funny story. Hopefully, he’ll tell it.
Music
‘In the Groove: Music That Gets You Movin’!’
Sat 7:30 p.m. McGlohon Theatre, 345 N. College St. $23-$29. www.carolinatix.org.
Go back in time when Carolina Voices’ MainStage Choir performs dance anthems from the ’60s through the ’80s. The set list will include Sly & The Family Stone’s “Dance to the Music,” Wilson Pickett’s “Land of 1000 Dances” and Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” (If they’re taking requests, we’d love to hear Men Without Hats’ “Safety Dance”...)
TV
‘I Love Lucy Superstar Special’
Sun 8 p.m. on CBS.
Go even further back in time when CBS airs two classic episodes of the 1950s series. According to a news release: “The two episodes – like those presented in previous years during Christmas – are newly colorized with a vintage look, a nod to the 1950s period in which they were filmed.” Worth seeing, even if you just like Lucy.
