‘Bridgerton’ Season 4 Part 2: Every Major Moment From the Finale, Explained
Warning: Spoilers Ahead.
The second half of Bridgerton Season 4 landed on Netflix on Feb. 26, and it packed an emotional punch. A heartbreaking death, a fairy-tale wedding and a surprising breakup all unfolded across the final four episodes, wrapping up the Cinderella-inspired love story at the season’s center while planting seeds for future chapters.
The concluding episodes resolved the storyline centered on Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) and Sophie Baek (Yerin Ha). But Benedict and Sophie’s romance was far from the only thread the show pulled tight. Here’s what happened — and what it all means for what comes next.
John Stirling’s death shakes the Bridgerton world
The most devastating moment in Part 2 is the death of John Stirling (Victor Alli), Francesca Bridgerton’s husband. John had been experiencing headaches throughout the season. He dies in his sleep, and the show makes a deliberate choice: his death is shown entirely through the reaction of Francesca Stirling (Hannah Dodd). His body never appears on screen.
Showrunner Jess Brownell explained that decision in an interview with Forbes.
“We tried to be really mindful of being respectful to the character, both in how much we got to grieve him, and really giving proper airtime to the feelings that came up from his loss,” Brownell explained to Forbes. “Not showing his body was a very specific conversation that was had. I think the idea of seeing the body of someone we loved on the show, particularly a Black male body, is just not something we were interested in seeing on our screens.”
Francesca and Michaela’s Bond Deepens
John’s death opens the door for one of the show’s most anticipated future storylines. His cousin, Michaela Stirling (Masali Baduza), returns to Mayfair in Part 2. She develops a friendship with Francesca and consoles her after the loss. But by the end of the season, Michaela leaves without saying goodbye — a bittersweet departure that signals unfinished business between them.
In Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton book series, Francesca’s second love is Michael Stirling. The television adaptation reimagines the character as Michaela.
Brownell told Forbes that Francesca and Michaela “are the best example of opposites attract.”
“They are so diametrically opposed, but it brings out a really interesting side of Francesca,” she said. “It allows us to know her more deeply. And I think Michaela also allows Fran to get to know herself more deeply, in a way that I think actually ends up bringing Fran closer to John towards the end of episode six, before he passes away.”
Benedict and Sophie Get Their Happily Ever After
The season’s central romance reaches its payoff in the finale. Benedict and Sophie marry in an end-credits scene set outside a cottage. Anthony serves as best man, and Hazel (Gracie McGonigal) is maid of honor.
Getting there required some Regency-era scheming. Earlier in the season, Sophie discovers her late father’s will and learns that Araminta (Katie Leung) has been embezzling her dowry. Benedict and Sophie blackmail Araminta into supporting the claim that Sophie is a Penwood relative of noble origins, clearing the path for their union in high society.
Violet and Marcus Hit a Wall
Not every romance ends with a walk down the aisle. Violet Bridgerton (Ruth Gemmell) and Lord Marcus Anderson (Daniel Francis) initially agree to marry. But in the finale, Violet decides she needs more time before remarrying. Marcus tells her he doubts she wants the same future and ends the relationship.
Brownell said it “felt too soon” for Violet to remarry.
“This is the first guy she’s dated since her husband died, and so we felt like maybe Marcus was the catalyst for her to realize that, in fact, she needs to start putting herself first and doing a bit more self-discovery, and that’s something we’re going to play with over the next couple of seasons,” Brownell teased to Forbes.
What Comes Next for the ‘Bridgerton’ Universe
The finale brings back fan-favorite couple Anthony (Jonathan Bailey) and Kate Bridgerton (Simone Ashley), who return from India with their baby boy.
Season 4 also introduces a new mystery: a new author takes over the Lady Whistledown column after Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) retires. Who is behind the pen now? That question will fuel speculation as fans look ahead.
At the season four premiere in Paris, Brownell said Eloise (Claudia Jessie) and Francesca’s storylines will be next, though she did not reveal the order.
With two major character arcs on deck and unresolved threads — Violet’s journey, the new Whistledown and the evolving bond between Francesca and Michaela — the Bridgerton universe has plenty of story left to tell.
