Fan's Decade-Long Love for Sidney Crosby Led to the Most Unexpected Proposal Ever
A Montreal couple’s trip to watch the Pittsburgh Penguins practice turned into a viral proposal when Sidney Crosby unknowingly drove into the moment, and the whole thing was caught on camera.
Mathieu and Sandra traveled to the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, the Penguins’ practice facility in Cranberry Township, PA, to watch the team practice in January. Sandra had no idea Mathieu was carrying a ring.
Mathieu had been planning a proposal for a while. Sandra had told him her two dream scenarios: in front of her family when she didn’t know it was coming, or having hockey be part of it.
His original plan was to propose at PPG Paints Arena, the Penguins’ home venue. That would have covered the hockey element. But what happened outside the practice facility made the arena plan feel small.
While the couple waited for players to exit after practice, Crosby drove by in his car. He happened to stop right in front of Mathieu and Sandra.
Mathieu read the moment instantly.
“I knew that her favorite player was Sidney Crosby, and she didn’t know that I was going to propose,” Mathieu said in an interview with the team, published March 11.
“Then, Sidney Crosby passed by, and she wanted to take a picture with him while I was getting ready. She didn’t know what I was doing, but I knew that it was happening right now,” he added.
Sandra’s son was standing ready with the camera. While Sandra was focused on her favorite player stopping in front of her, Mathieu dropped to one knee. After popping the question, he gave Crosby a thumbs up.
The video went viral on TikTok.
“We were waiting after the morning skate to try to get some autographs, and the captain came over to see us. I took the opportunity because it was magical for my fiancée,” Mathieu shared in a comment.
Mathieu didn’t arrange for Crosby to be there. He didn’t coordinate with the team’s PR department or set up a jumbotron moment. He saw his window and took it, scrapping his PPG Paints Arena plan on the spot.
A Decade of Pittsburgh Penguins Fandom
The Crosby connection runs deep for Sandra. She’s been a Penguins fan for more than a decade, a devotion that traces back to the 2014 Winter Olympics.
She fell in love with hockey after watching Team Canada play. Canada, which included two Penguins players — Chris Kunitz and Crosby — won gold that year.
“When my son was 7 years old, I told him to pick a team that we would follow, and he chose the Penguins,” Sandra told the team.
Now 12 years later, Sandra and her son, Shayan, now 18, are huge Penguins fans. Their favorite player is Crosby — the same player who unknowingly became the backdrop to one of the most personal moments of Sandra’s life.
“The Penguins play a big chunk of my life with my son,” she told the team. “Hockey glued us together, and that’s how we spend a lot of quality and exciting time when we watch the Penguins play. Mathieu being a part of it brings a lot of fulfillment in our lives.”
Sandra had spelled out her two dream proposal scenarios, and she got both without anyone having to orchestrate it: hockey was part of it, and the surprise was total.
Her son, camera already rolling, caught the whole thing. Mathieu’s thumbs-up to Crosby afterward is the kind of unscripted detail that made the video worth rewatching.
