Jon Hamm Reveals the Friends He'd Steal From in Real Life — But Refuses to Name Names

Jon Hamm has built a career playing characters who blur the line between charm and mischief. His latest role is no exception — and it turns out, a little bit of that mischief might be real.

In the hit Apple TV+ series Your Friends & Neighbors, Hamm plays Andrew “Coop” Cooper, a financial titan who finds himself divorced and unemployed after sleeping with a colleague.

After being blackballed from the finance sector, Coop resorts to burglarizing the homes of those in his social circle and pawning the items to stay afloat.

But would Hamm steal from his friends in real life?

Jon Hamm Reveals His Dream Oscar Heist

Thanks to an interview with SFGate, published March 31, we now have an answer — and it’s both entertaining and perfectly on brand.

“I’ve got quite a few friends that have certain shaped awards that I would probably steal but not so I could have them,” he told the outlet.

But his urge to steal wasn’t rooted in jealousy. Instead, it was the polar opposite.

“Just so I could hide the awards from them and cause them anxiety. That would be more fun. Go steal somebody’s Academy Award,” he added.

When asked to name names of those on his hit list, Hamm said he would “never” reveal the targets.

For the record, Hamm has never been nominated for an Oscar, but his trophy shelf is far from bare. He has one Emmy (18 nominations), two Golden Globes (seven nominations) and two SAG Awards (14 nominations).

Hamm Recalls a Comic Book Incident From Years Ago

While Hamm isn’t a thief in real life, he does have a history of having things stolen from him — including a formative incident from childhood that clearly left a mark.

“I have not stolen from a friend, but I had a comic book taken by a friend of mine when I was in fifth or sixth grade,” he told SFGate. “I was furious to the point where I made my dad call this guy’s dad and say, ‘Yo, give my kid his comic books back.’”

Hamm clarified that it wasn’t an especially important comic. As he remembered it, it was the S issue from his collection of The History of the Marvel Universe comics. But the principle of the thing mattered.

“I was like, ‘This is not OK,’” he said of the memory. “There was no internet. I couldn’t just order up another one.”

The good news? He got the comic back — and those comics are still sitting in his closet to this day. As for the kid who took it, Hamm drew a blank: “Honestly, I couldn’t even tell you his name.”

Hamm Says He’d Be a ‘Terrible Thief’

But for anyone still wondering whether Hamm could actually pull off a heist like Coop does on screen, he put that notion to rest with one final confession.

“I was raised Catholic and would have to confess immediately,” he concluded.

So while Coop might be able to rob his wealthy neighbors blind, Hamm’s real-life criminal career would be extremely short-lived — done in by guilt before the getaway car even left the driveway.
