Rory McIlroy Treats Past Masters Champions to a Lavish Dinner With a $50K Wine Tab
Every year at Augusta National, the reigning Masters champion takes on a unique responsibility: hosting the annual Champions Dinner for all previous winners.
This year, Rory McIlroy stepped into that role — and by all accounts, he delivered an unforgettable evening.
The Northern Irish golfer earned the honor after becoming the sixth golfer in history to win all four major championships at last year’s Masters Tournament.
The dinner, held on the Tuesday of Masters week, puts the defending champion in the spotlight as both host and menu curator — and the champion pays the bill.
Rory McIlroy’s Wine Selection Cost More Than $50,000
The food was only part of the story. McIlroy hand-picked wines that carried deep personal significance.
There were four wines included in the lineup: 2015 Salon S Brut Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, 2022 Domaine Leflaive Bâtard-Montrachet, 1990 Château Lafite Rothschild and 1989 Château d’Yquem.
Each bottle had a connection to McIlroy’s life.
The Domaine was the first white wine McIlroy ever liked. The 1990 Château was what he drank the night he won the Masters for the first time in 2025. The 1989 Château is a nod to his birth year.
“Obviously ‘89, my birth year, and I think every great meal deserves to be finished off with Château D’Yquem. It is like liquid gold,” McIlroy said of the 1989 Château , according to Golf Monthly.
According to the Golf Channel, the wine bill alone cost more than $50,000. The 2022 Domaine was the most expensive, coming in at around $1,800 per bottle. The 2015 Salon and 1990 Château were also north of $1,000 per bottle.
It is rumored to be the priciest Masters Champions Dinner ever.
The Rest of Rory McIlroy’s Menu Was Personal
McIlroy approached the task with intention, balancing personal taste with crowd appeal.
“I was trying to achieve something that I would enjoy — and ties back to experiences that I’ve had — but also wanted it to be something that all the other people in that room would enjoy as well,” the golfer said of the meal prior to the dinner on Tuesday.
He also had a playful response for those who expected a more traditional spread from his homeland.
“People keep asking me, ‘Why didn’t you go more Irish?’ And I said, ‘Because I want to enjoy the dinner as well,’” McIlroy joked.
The Masters Dinner menu featured appetizers of peach and ricotta flatbread, rock shrimp tempura, bacon-wrapped dates and grilled elk sliders. The first course was yellowfin tuna carpaccio with foie gras, toasted baguette and chives.
For the main course, guests chose between wagyu filet mignon or seared salmon, served alongside traditional Irish champ, sauteed brussels sprouts, glazed carrots with brown butter and crispy vidalia onion rings.
Dessert was sticky toffee pudding — something former champ Gary Player took a strong liking to.
“I ate three-quarters of it,” Player said, per the Golf Channel. “That’s my weakness is I like sugar, and I’ve got to try and stop.”
Rory McIlroy Savors the Moment — For Now
For McIlroy, the evening carried a weight he didn’t take lightly.
“I said it in the room last night, but all of us in that room were the envy of the sports world last night,” McIlroy said, per the Golf Channel.
“Everyone else would love to be in that room, and I certainly don’t ever want to take it for granted. I tried to treat it as if it was the only time I would host a dinner. Hopefully, it’s not,” he added.
The Masters Tournament tees off on Thursday, April 9 and concludes on Sunday, April 12. There are 91 players — including 18 past champions — in the field. Only one will win.
