Rock 'n' Roll Legend, One of the World's Best-Selling Artists of All Time, Turns 81 Today

Today-Wednesday, May 6, 2026-Bob Seger celebrates a new year of life as the American rock legend marks his 81st birthday.

The singer-songwriter-guitarist, a Detroit, Mich., native known for his signature raspy voice, has become a defining artist of the genre over the years. His powerful blend of rock, country, and soul made him an unmistakable and timeless talent. Seger first broke through in 1969 with his debut album, Ramblin' Gamblin' Man, which contained his first national hit of the same name.

Seger's sole No. 1 hit, "Shakedown," from hit action-comedy film Beverly Hills Cop II, was released on May 23, 1987, making it to the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 on Aug. 1 of that year. Though it was his only chart-topper, the icon notched seven other entries on the Top 10, including 1976's "Night Moves," 1980's "Against the Wind" and "Fire Lake," and 1981's "Tryin' to Live My Life Without You."

Additionally, his group, The Silver Bullet Band, earned two Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 hits: 1978's "Still the Same," peaking at No. 4, and 1982's "Shame on the Moon," peaking at No. 2.

"It took him a while to get rolling in terms of being a mainstream commercial force. But once he reached that point, Bob Seger proved he belonged there, becoming one of the most consistent classic rock forces on the charts in the United States in the ‘70s and ‘80s," American Songwriter wrote of the rock star in 2025.

Over the span of his six-decade career, the artist has sold over 75 million records worldwide, making him one of the world's best-selling artists of all time. Seger was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2012.

The rock staple retired from touring in November 2019 following his Roll Me Away: The Final Tour concert series.
