2001 Hit Action Film With Two Oscar Awards Is Suddenly Climbing the Charts 25 Years Later
Twenty-five years since Black Hawk Down had its theatrical debut, the war drama film is making an unexpected comeback.
Directed by Ridley Scott, the 2001 film, written by Ken Nolan and Mark Bowden, was based on a true story centered on a mission in 1993 involving the U.S. Army Rangers and Delta Force operators targeting lieutenants loyal to warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid during the conflict that later became known as the Battle of Mogadishu.
Apart from the cutting-edge filmmaking and notable storyline, the movie also featured a massive ensemble cast of rising stars and A-listers.
Headlined by Josh Hartnett, Ewan McGregor and Eric Bana, along with Tom Sizemore, William Fichtner, Sam Shepard and Jason Isaacs, the lead stars gave justice and depth to their characters.
After over two decades, the movie found an unexpected resurgence thanks to streaming sites like Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.
Apart from its comeback, Black Hawk Down is also being viewed in a new light in today's cinematic landscape.
Quentin Tarantino, the renowned filmmaker, unveiled a list of his favorite movies of all time, with the Ridley Scott-directed war epic making it to his top picks.
"I liked it when I first saw it, but I actually think it was so intense that it stopped working for me, and I didn't carry it with me the way that I should've," he mentioned in an interview on The Bret Easton Ellis podcast as cited by Variety.
According to the director, who saw the film "a couple of times," he described it as a "masterwork," noting that Quentin Tarantino believes that Black Hawk Down is one of the movies that truly captured the same kind of intense experience created by Francis Ford Coppola in Apocalypse Now.
"It keeps up the intensity for 2 hours 45 minutes, or whatever it is, and I watched it again recently," he shared, adding, "My heart was going through the entire runtime of the movie; it had me and never let me go, and I hadn't seen it in a while. The feat of direction is beyond extraordinary."
True enough, at the time of the movie's big screen debut, Black Hawk Down received positive feedback from viewers and won two Academy Awards, including Best Film Editing and Best Sound.
Adding to its achievements were three BAFTA nominations for Best Cinematography, Best Editing and Best Sound.
