1974 Classic, With Zero No. 1 Hit Singles on its Soundtrack, Ranked Among Best Rock Movies of All Time

Some films start out as flops but build cult followings over time. That was the case for this horror-comedy, which featured a cast stacked with rock icons.

In January, Ultimate Classic Rock selected the best rock-focused movie from each year between 1955 and 2025. Listed among classic films such as George Lucas' 1973 film American Graffiti and Ken Russell's 1975 film Tommy, Freddie Francis' film, Son of Dracula was chosen as the top rock film of 1974.

Due to a lack of distributors willing to release the project, Son of Dracula sat on a shelf for two years until it was acquired by Apple Films. In 1974, the movie finally premiered in the U.S. as a limited theatrical release.

Although the film featured major rock icons such as, Ringo Starr, Harry Nilsson, John Bonham, Keith Moon and Peter Frampton, Son of Dracula ultimately flopped at the box office. In an attempt to save face, the film was often billed under the title Young Dracula to profit from the success of Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein, but to little avail.

Even though the film flopped commercially and critically, it developed a cult following over time. Son of Dracula is often cited as a "lost artifact" by curious fans interested in forgotten '70s rock media.

Despite producing no No. 1 hits, the film contained a stacked soundtrack featuring established Nilsson chart-toppers like "Without You," "Jump into the Fire" and "The Moonbeam Song." The movie's only original track, "Daybreak," peaked at No. 39 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Son of Dracula still endures among its cult following today, regardless of its lack of mainstream appeal. The full version remains available on sites like YouTube, kept alive by dedicated old-school rock fans.
