‘World War Z 2' Release Date, Trailer, and Everything We Know
12 years since "World War Z" spilled onto screens in a ball of writhing limbs, Paramount finally confirmed a sequel.
The news came during CinemaCon 2026, held at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas from April 13–16. During a press conference, Paramount executive Josh Greenstein announced the next slate of priority projects, which includes the as-yet-unnamed "World War Z" sequel.
"[Greenstein] confirmed that Paramount is developing new installments of Star Trek, G.I. Joe, Transformers, World War Z, Sonic the Hedgehog, Paranormal Activity, Possession, Longlegs, and Jackass," wrote IGN.
"They also announced Top Gun 3, Call of Duty, and new installments of Star Trek, G.I. Joe, and Transformers."
Grossing over $540 million worldwide against an estimated budget of $190 million, "World War Z" is the highest-grossing zombiemovie of all time. It was also Brad Pitt‘s highest-grossing film before “F1” overtook it in 2025.
So why has it taken this long for a sequel to take shape?
Why Was There No Sequel to ‘World War Z’?
Delays and rewrites resulted in a ballooning budget, which hampered the progress of the “World War Z” sequel. Further complicating plans was the departure of director Marc Foster. He helmed the first film, but announced he would not be returning for the sequel.
For a time, David Fincher was the replacement. However, Paramount halted pre-production in 2019. In 2023, Fincher spoke candidly about the film, likening it to HBO’s acclaimed post-apocalyptic series starring Pedro Pascal.
“It was a little like The Last of Us,” Fincher told GQ. “I’m glad that we didn’t do what we were doing because The Last of Us has a lot more real estate to explore the same stuff. In our title sequence, we were going to use the little parasite… they used it in their title sequence and in that wonderful opening with the Dick Cavett, David Frost-style talk show.”
What Will Happen in the Sequel to World War Z
Paramount has not revealed the plot of “World War Z 2.” However, if it continues to adapt author Max Brooks’ source material, it could chronicle the post-war rebuilding of civilization after Pitt’s Gerry Lane manages to help source a cure in the first film. It might be told in flashbacks, as survivors give testimonies as to how they won the zombie war.
Alternatively, it might take place concurrently with the first film, but with a different protagonist. It is not known whether Pitt is returning.
