Your guide to Friday’s entertainment in Charlotte

First Day Hikes

Various times. All North Carolina state parks; choose one from the list on the website: www.ncparks.gov/first-day-hikes.

The hikes are led by park staff and vary in difficulty. Two suggestions close to Charlotte: Crowders Mountain State Park in Kings Mountain, where park staff will lead a moderately difficult 5- to 6-mile hike at 9 a.m.; and Lake Norman State Park in Troutman, where the park ranger will lead an easy hike at 9 a.m.

First Footin’

11 a.m. Historic Rural Hill, 4431 Neck Road, Huntersville. Free, but please bring something to share for the meal. www.ruralhill.net.

As part of the Scottish New Year tradition, participants will walk the borders of the property, stopping together to listen to stories of history and folklore. The walk is 2 to 3 miles, so dress comfortably. Following First Footin’, there’ll be a dramatic reading of the story “Stone Soup” and a luncheon.

Dance

‘The Hip-Hop Nutcracker’

3 and 8 p.m. (also Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday). Booth Playhouse, 130 N. Tryon St. $19.50-$44.50. www.blumenthalarts.org.

A dozen dancers, DJ, MC and digital scenery bring the traditional story and Tchaikovsky’s music to life in a contemporary urban setting.
