182 college students ready to work for you

Need a baby sitter? Pet sitter? What about help with yard chores or a Spanish language tutor for your kid?

I've found a potential lifesaver: a directory of college students looking to earn extra cash.

It's called the Queens Service Referral List and it's put out three times a year – soon after the start of the fall, spring and summer sessions – by Queens University of Charlotte.

The fall list just came out. It's $20 a semester. On it are the names of 182 Queens students for hire, along with the kind of work they can do, availability, contact information and whether they have a car. It's up to clients and students to negotiate pay.

This fall, nearly 30 more students signed on to the list, which Dean of Students John Downey attributes to the struggling economy.

“There is no student I have spoken to who didn't say things are harder. Everything is more expensive and they have a greater need for income,” he said.

Proceeds from the list go directly to improve student life, said Downey. In the past, it's paid for Adirondack chairs for the residential quad and to reupholster exercise equipment in the fitness center. Last year, the list brought in $5,300.

The list is released three times a year because student info often changes by semester.
