Teacher of the Arts: Andrea King

As one of the teaching artists at Children’s Theatre of Charlotte, Andrea King helps children develop theater skills. With 10 years experience, she has taught a variety of classes and summer camp programs. The programs reach more than 2,300 youth between ages 2-18 and use acting, musical theater and creative dramatics to encourage self-expression and creativity.

Trial by fire: King has a bachelor’s degree in theater, speech and dance from the University of South Carolina, but had no teacher training. “I jumped right in, teaching the way I was taught. Although, along the way I’ve picked up some tricks of the trade and added my own style.”

Summer camp: “I’m proud to say that I wrote four of the scripts we’ll be using in camp this summer. Each Monday a new set of campers arrive and by Friday we’ve put together a semi-full scale production with five scenes, seven songs and dances, lights and scene changes.”

Rewarding work: “It’s awesome seeing kids change and grow and accomplish something that they didn’t even know they could do.”
