Here’s what’s coming up in Charlotte’s visual arts
What to do
See Black X White at Anne Neilson Fine Art. This new exhibition presents five artists who “push the boundaries of a two-toned aesthetic” through two- and three-dimensional work in a variety of media. Artists on view include Kim Fonder, Edwina Fleming, Korey Gulbrandson, Caroline Boykin and Case Baumgarten, who is a new addition to the gallery. The exhibition is now open, and the gallery will host a reception on Jan. 23 from 6-8 p.m. On view through Feb. 26.
What to see
Hidell Brooks has opened two solo exhibitions with work by painters Brian Coleman and Chris Terry. Coleman’s exhibition, “Pieces and Parts,” includes abstract painterly strokes and calligraphic lines on a lightly painted base. The gesture work is delicate and lyrical. Chris Terry’s exhibition “Portals” is a group of realist paintings of interior spaces. At first glance they are simple still life paintings of objects on a table, but the scenes are opened by included sections of windows or doorways (portals). These exhibitions are on view through Feb. 21.
Where to go
If you haven’t been in a while, stop by the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art on Jan. 17 from 5-9 p.m. The free event Bechtler by Night takes place every third Friday, honoring a commitment to share the Bechtler collection with the entire community. Each event includes games, live entertainment and a full cash bar. See the newly opened exhibition “TEN,” which celebrates the museum’s 10th anniversary.
