Charlotte Symphony cancels upcoming 6-concert schedule as N.C. stays in Phase 2
The Charlotte Symphony has canceled its six-program live-performance schedule for August due to ongoing restrictions on large events in North Carolina.
The Symphony, which shut down performances in March, planned to restart with a festival of six events Aug. 7 through 22, including a free concert at Knight Theater Aug. 16 with music from the movies “Star Wars” and “Pirates of the Caribbean.”
N.C. Gov. Roy Cooper announced Tuesday that Phase 2 of the state’s reopening plan, in regard to the pandemic, would extend at least another three weeks. One of the elements of Phase 2 is restricting large gatherings, such as concerts.
“To say that we are disappointed would be an understatement,” interim Symphony President and CEO Michelle Hamilton said in a statement Wednesday.
“We so hoped that we would be able to gather again next month to experience the joy of live music together, but the health and safety of our audience, musicians, and staff is paramount. Despite this setback, we choose to remain hopeful that when the time is right, we will be able to share live performances with our community again.”
On March 13 the symphony suspended all performances through at least July 2, in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak.
This three-week festival of events was to include a classical concert, a pops performance, a family concert, a film-related concert and a concert at Triple C Brewery. One of the six performances -- based on the music of the movie “Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark” — will be rescheduled for next June.
Ticket-holders should visit charlottesymphony.org/covid-19/ for ticket options.
The Symphony will continue to present weekly al Fresco concerts, available for free on Facebook and YouTube, on Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m.
