Artful: What to do and see in Charlotte

Shaun Cassidy, Laurel Holtzapple and Lauren Doran created “Community Spring” at Reid Park, with three boulders and textured concrete seating, inspired by the neighborhood’s spring, street patterns and tradition of quilting.

Each week, Lia Newman and Grace Cote offer Observer readers a to-do list on immersing yourself in visual arts around town. Newman is director/curator of the Van Every/Smith Galleries at Davidson College, Cote is senior coordinator at Jerald Melberg Gallery, and they collaborate on the blog HappeningsCLT (happeningsCLT.com).

Where to go

Miami: It hosts the biggest art week in the world, with art fairs, hip parties and cool happenings that offer an opportunity to catch the latest contemporary trends in one place. The Bechtler is taking a group of donors, and two Charlotte galleries will exhibit work at prominent fairs. (If you can’t make it, we promise to drink a mojito in your honor!)

What to do

Go to one or both of Charlotte’s best seasonal potters markets. Central Piedmont Community College hosts its annual sale featuring functional and sculptural ceramics at 10 a.m. Thursday (proceeds support students and fund the visiting artist program). Winthrop University’s pottery and ceramics sale, in its 26th year, is noon-6 p.m. Friday. The sale supports the university’s impressive ceramics department, student artists and scholarships.

Who to meet

Rock Hill sculptor and public artist Shaun Cassidy. You may already know some of his projects, like the metal sculptures adorning the Ritz Carlton or the 7th Street Station Blue Line stop. Cassidy recently completed his latest commission at Reid Park. Organized by the Arts & Science Council, this project partnered him with landscape designers Laurel Holtzapple and Lauren Doran to create four sculptural elements involving stone and cast concrete. The project looks great.
