Artful: What to do and see in Charlotte
Each week, Grace Cote and Lia Newman offer Observer readers a to-do list on immersing yourself in visual arts around town. Newman is director/curator of the Van Every/Smith Galleries at Davidson College, Cote is senior coordinator at Jerald Melberg Gallery, and they collaborate on the blog HappeningsCLT (happeningsCLT.com).
What to see
Jeremy Mitchell Pelt at The Dwelling. This pop-up exhibition series, organized by Kathleen Bloom, Mike Gentry and Eric Beckwith, happens about once every three months, features no more than two artists, and is always staged in someone’s home. On January 22, “Jeremy Mitchell Pelt: Even While We Sleep” showcases new paintings created by the artist while in residence at the Banff Center in Alberta, Canada. Pelt’s colorful paintings toe the line between abstract and representational, with floating elements joining in constellations to make recognizable scenes. 5-9 p.m. Jan. 22 at 4548 Crestmont Drive. http://thedwellingclt.com/
What to do
Sozo Gallery will host its first Lunch and Lecture with Micah Cash noon-1 p.m. Jan. 20. His paintings are currently on view in a group show at the gallery. Cash paints flat, minimalist landscapes that are stripped of detail because they are from memory and also representative of ecological and industrial implications of surrounding communities. The gallery sits at the plaza in front of the Hearst Tower, so it’s a perfect lunchtime break for uptown art lovers; RSVP required. http://sozogallery.net/events/
Who to meet
Emerging photographer and Charlotte native Brittany Little has recently caught our eye with “Asymmetrical,” a series of portraits of her eccentric identical twin brothers. The photographs are playful and representative of the freedom of youth but set in awkward and unattractive environments – on unmade beds in cluttered rooms, in front of dumpsters and in bathrooms. Her work will be on view in “Kindred,” a photography exhibition at SOCO Gallery Feb. 3-April 2.
