NBA’s Steph Curry helping produce movie about slain Charleston, SC, church members
When NBA star Stephen Curry announced his Hollywood production company this year, he said he planned to focus in part on projects with family and religious themes, The Charlotte Observer reported in an April 24 article.
Those themes surface in “Emanuel,” a documentary about the 2015 slaying of nine members of Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, by a white supremacist.
Now, Curry has been announced co-executive producer, with award-winning actress Viola Davis, of the film.
“Humbled to be part of the process to tell this amazing story,” Curry tweeted Thursday night with a link to a story about the movie in Variety magazine.
Curry and his Unanimous Media production company are joining Viola Davis and four others as executive producers of the 75-minute film, Variety reported.
“An honor to be a part of this powerful piece of truth telling,” Davis tweeted.
Davis is in her eighth season of the TV series “How to Get Away with Murder” on ABC and stars in the crime drama “Widows,” opening Nov. 16.
Curry is a point guard for the Golden State Warriors. The team has won three NBA titles with Curry, who also starred at Davidson College.
“Emanuel” still needs a distributor, “which is a big reason Davis and Curry came on board,” according to Variety.
The film “features interviews with survivors and family members and is a poignant story of justice and faith, love and hate, and the healing power of forgiveness,” Deadline.com reported. “It was made in partnership with the city of Charleston and the victims’ families.”
Dylann Roof was given nine life sentences and the death penalty after pleading guilty in 2017 to killing the church members, The (Columbia) State reported at the time.
In a statement Thursday, Curry said the movie “highlights how a horrible tragedy can bring a community together, and spreads an important message about the power of forgiveness,” Vibe.com reported.
The film “will be featured at DOC NYC, the country’s largest documentary film festival, on Nov. 14-15,” The Mercury News reported.
The movie is Curry’s second on which he’s serving as an executive producer.
In October, he tweeted that he will serve a similar role with the faith-based Hollywood drama, “Breakthrough,” the Observer reported in an Oct. 18 article.
