K. Michelle wakes up each day to a new headline. Last week, it was her breakdown during a radio interview while discussing her breakup with British actor Idris Elba – the inspiration behind her sophomore album, “Anybody Wanna Buy a Heart?”
“Today I’m dating Nicki Minaj’s ex-boyfriend, and Nicki’s mad at me,” says Michelle (real name Kimberly Pate), addressing Tuesday morning’s TMZ story from her hotel room in Raleigh.
She brings her My Twisted Mind tour to The Fillmore Charlotte Thursday.
The former “Love & Hip Hop Atlanta” star – who launched her own VH1 reality series, “My Life,” in November – doesn’t hide from drama.

While promoting “Anybody Wanna Buy a Heart?” she admitted that the album is about Elba. She broke it off after makeup artist Nayiana Garth announced she was pregnant with his baby; Garth and Elba are now together, and Michelle addresses being the other woman in the single “Maybe I Should Call.”
“My last album was about the love of my life, and he’s probably mad because he’s a famous person and I sang all about him,” she says of Elba, who co-directed her VH1 special “The Rebellious Soul Musical.”
“If I can’t write a song about them, then we’re not going to date,” she says. “I’m the black Taylor Swift. As long as I’m writing the truth, there’s not much you can say.”
