8 buzzworthy concerts coming to Charlotte in the next week
Jon Batiste
Friday 8 p.m. Booth Playhouse, 130 N. Tryon St. $25-$65. www.blumenthalarts.org.
At age 31, the Manhattan-based, Louisiana-raised multi-instrumentalist has done more than most musicians twice his age. A regular on “30 under 30” lists, he appeared on HBO’s “Treme,” heads Stephen Colbert’s “Late Show” house band, is co-artistic director at the Jazz Museum of Harlem, and has collaborated with everyone from Prince to Red Hot Chili Peppers’ drummer Chad Smith; but he’s on his own for this “Solo in the Round” tour.
Tribute to Women of Music to Benefit Levine Children’s Hospital
Friday 8 p.m. Neighborhood Theatre, 511 E. 36th St. $10-$30. www.neighborhoodtheatre.com.
Following successful fundraisers that paid tribute to legendary artists like the Doors and Tom Petty, Ancient Cities’ Justin Fedor gathers local musicians the Monday Night Allstars, It’s Snakes, Tyler Ramsey, Elonzo Wesleythe, Maya Beth Atkins, Reeve Coobs, Lisa De Novo, Bassh, Evergone and Matrimony playing the music of Pat Benatar, Blondie, Eurythmics, Aretha Franklin, Gillian Welch, Fleetwood Mac and others.
Late Bloomer
Friday 10 p.m. Snug Harbor, 1228 Gordon St. $5. www.snugrock.com.
The Charlotte trio celebrates the release of its third album, “Waiting” — its first for California-based 6131 Records. “Waiting” finds the group refining and redefining its sound. Whereas its indie, noise, punk and hardcore influences shone through in the past, those sources are broader and more varied this time out. With Faye and TKO Faith Healer.
Sons of Bill
Saturday 8 p.m. Neighborhood Theatre, 511 E. 36th St. $15. www.neighborhoodtheatre.com.
The Wilson brothers return to NoDa following Friday’s release of its long-awaited new album, “Oh God Ma’am.” Having weathered a slew of personal problems (divorce, illness and addiction among them) and come out the other end, the band’s sound has grown in scope. It could be the record that breaks that Americana bubble.
Wax Chattels
Tuesday 7 p.m. Lunchbox Records, 825 Central Ave. Free. www.facebook.com/pg/lunchboxrecords/events.
You won’t miss the guitar in this Auckland, New Zealand synth, bass and drum trio, which makes experimental noisy art rock that’s provocative and weird yet still accessible. Its members met studying jazz performance, which explains its free-thinking approach to music and lyrics, whether it’s paying homage to an “X-Files” star or attacking the bonds of femininity.
Foreigner
Wednesday 7 p.m. PNC Music Pavilion, 707 Pavilion Blvd. $29.50-$350. www.livenation.com.
The Juke Box Heroes announced last week that original members Lou Gramm, Dennis Elliott, Al Greenwood, Ian McDonald and early-era bassist Rick Wills will join founding guitarist Mick Jones’ current lineup of the band for a special reunion at Sturgis. That’s not the lineup you’ll see here. Kelly Hansen (who has fronted the band since 2003) & Co. remain the band’s regular touring lineup. With Whitesnake and Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin.
Barenaked Ladies
Thursday 7 p.m. Charlotte Metro Credit Union Amphitheatre, 1000 NC Music Factory Blvd. $29.50-$69.50. www.livenation.com.
The Canadian popster’s decidedly retro-leaning annual “Last Summer On Earth” tour hits Charlotte a day before the release of the 20th-anniversary reissue of its most successful album, “Stunt.” Fellow ’90s alt-rock radio staple Better Than Ezra and Scottish rock singer-songwriter KT Tunstall, whose hits came later, round out the bill.
