7 buzzworthy concerts coming to Charlotte in the next week | Dec. 20-26
Eli Young Band
8 p.m. Friday. The Fillmore, 820 Hamilton St. $29.50.
The Texas country-rock outfit is touring in support compilation album “This Is Eli Young: Greatest Hits,” which was released last March and spans its tenure of 17 years. The album and subsequent tour combine the band’s charted hits alongside older fan favorites and gems, giving longtime supporters and newcomers alike an accessible retrospective.
Doom Flamingo
9 p.m. Friday. Neighborhood Theatre, 511 E. 36th St. $20-$30.
This Charleston, S.C. band is the dance-y, synth-wave side project of Umphrey’s McGee bassist Ryan Stasik, with a Lowcountry super-group collection of musicians that includes captivating vocalist Kanika Moore, whose powerful voice brings a glamorous charm to the band’s eerie ’80s sound. In fact, calling it a “side project” may not be fair — Doom Flamingo’s sultry sound is spellbinding all on its own.
Mike Strauss Band
9 p.m. Saturday. Comet Grill, 2224 Park Road. Free.
The bluesy folk-rock band — which has released nine studio albums (including this year’s “Escalating Blues”) and is no stranger to the Charlotte music scene — assembles for a show that is expected to last for three hours.
The Blue Dogs
8 p.m. Saturday. Neighborhood Theatre, 511 E. 36th St. $25 and up.
Pioneers of Americana since the late 1980s, the Carolina natives blend bluegrass, rock and country into a melting pot of Southern sounds and have shared stages with innovators like Willie Nelson and Widespread Panic. Although the band hasn’t released an album in well over a decade, they continue to tour extensively and put on engaging live shows.
2 Slices
10 p.m. Saturday. Snug Harbor, 1228 Gordon St. $5.
This edition of the dance party called “Oh Snap!” features this Charleston-based funky electro-pop group, which includes singer Danny Martin, frontman for the now-defunct surf-psychedelia band Octopus Jones. Martin and bandmate Brandon Fudge (aka DJ Lazercat) craft intoxicating, beat-driven pop and their live performances showcase Martin’s Sam Herring-esque choreography.
Sean Mason Trio
6 and 8:15 p.m. Sunday. Middle C Jazz, 300 S. Brevard St. $12-$20.
Get some holiday cheer with a special “Charlie Brown Christmas and Cool Holiday Favorites” show as the Charlotte native and acclaimed jazz musician leads this threesome in interpreting the Vince Guaraldi Trio album in its entirety in a pair of intimate performances.
DaBaby
8 p.m. Monday. Bojangles’ Coliseum, 2700 E. Independence Blvd. $61 and up.
On Dec. 5, Power 98 presented its annual Winter Block Party — which featured Megan Thee Stallion and Fetty Wap — but due to unforeseen circumstances, Charlotte’s most famous rapper of all-time was unable to perform. In a sequel to the Block Party that also serves as a makeup show, he’ll perform for his hometown fans to wrap up the decade.
