The Rolling Stones’ have postponed their “No Filter” tour of North America — including the show scheduled for Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium on July 1 — due to the ongoing global coronavirus pandemic.

“We’re hugely disappointed to have to postpone the tour,” the band said in a statement on Tuesday afternoon. “We are sorry to all the fans who were looking forward to it as much as we were, but the health and safety of everyone has to take priority. We will all get through this together — and we’ll see you very soon.”

Promoter AEG Presents/Concerts West said it is advising ticketholders to hold onto their original tickets and await further information.

It’s yet another addition to a growing list of events that have been postponed or canceled in Charlotte in response to the pandemic, and that list already included some major ones: In the past week, Spectrum Center’s schedule for the near future has been wiped clean, with the suspension of the NBA season and the postponement of a Michael Bublé concert, the Lit AF Tour hosted by Martin Lawrence, and the Harlem Globetrotters’ exhibition game. The Winter Jam Christian music festival also was canceled.

But the Rolling Stones’ July show is perhaps the most significant to yet be shelved in Charlotte. Frontman Mick Jagger, guitarist Keith Richards, guitarist Ronnie Wood, and drummer Charlie Watts haven’t been here in almost a decade and a half; the band was last in Charlotte on Oct. 21, 2005, when it christened the opening of the former Charlotte Bobcats Arena (now Spectrum Center) in front of a sold-out crowd as part of its “A Bigger Bang Tour.”

It’s also, perhaps, the most surprising announcement thus far — the concert date was 3-1/2 months away, and fans might not necessarily have expected a decision like this from the Stones so soon. After all, the Billy Joel concert scheduled for April 18 at Bank of America Stadium has not yet been postponed; and stadium shows by Garth Brooks (May 2) and Def Leppard and Mötley Crüe (July 11) are still on the calendar for the time being.

The Rolling Stones’ 15-date summer tour was due to kick off in San Diego on May 8 and end in Atlanta on July 9.

The Stones’ tour through North America last year was postponed after Mick Jagger underwent surgery to replace a valve in his heart, but the band quickly rescheduled those dates and ultimately only had to delay the tour by a few weeks.

All four band members are now in their 70s, and Watts will turn 79 in June.
