Running Influencer Eugene Lim Dead at Age 45 3 Days After Wedding
Running influencer Eugene Limhas died at age 45 after getting married to his wife, Sofie Chandra, three days prior.
"Eug has passed on, a true legend, the love of my life," Chandra announced via Instagram on April 10. "His light will keep shining on and on."
Chandra previously shared photos from the couple's April 7 wedding, which showed them posing with their marriage certificate at Lim's bedside, adding that she "couldn't be more honored" to be Lim's wife.
Lim was diagnosed with stage 4 urothelial bladder cancer in 2024 after experiencing symptoms for more than two years. The disease spread to his neck and lungs.
The rugby player and Muay Thai athlete initially noticed a dark color to his urine while running a full marathon in his apartment building's parking lot during the COVID-19 pandemic. He underwent a bladder test in 2022 but no abnormalities were found.
Lim intermittently experienced dark-colored urine over the next two years until he pushed for a battery of tests in 2024. At the time, Lim discovered that his urine was dark red while competing in a two-day, 50km charity run from Thailand to Singapore.
"Oddly enough, I was relatively calm by all measures for a few reasons," he told Parkway Cancer Center. "I had time over the last four years to think about this. Obviously, when the urine discolouration first appeared, I read up a bit and knew the spectrum of what it could be."
He went on, "Also, my CT scan review was pushed up by a day, so I knew it was serious. I was already mentally prepared. I'm someone who rarely fell sick, but I always thought that one day, I would probably face a serious illness. I just didn't expect it to happen this soon."
Lim was ultimately diagnosed with stage 4 bladder cancer. He continued to compete in running events throughout his treatment.
"People ask me why I still train, why I run and still work," he explained. "When a person is diagnosed with a life-threatening situation, they're almost expected to embrace a YOLO [you only live once] mindset and do something completely different. But for me, training, running and work are things I love doing. I still need to live that life."
In January, Chandra announced that Eugene proposed to her as his health started to sharply deteriorate. The runner popped the question with an Alexandrite ring that matched his "June birthstone."
"He had put so much thought and intention to it. My heart," she confirmed via Instagram. "We sat together in bed after, and we talked and we cried."
Chandra shared a few details about her engagement ring, writing, "Alexandrite is a rare, valuable gemstone from the chrysoberyl family, famous for its dramatic color change from green/bluish-green in daylight to red/purplish-red under incandescent light, earning it the nickname ‘emerald by day, ruby by night'. So true to how Eug is, always unexpected, always full of surprises, always unpredictable yet steadfast. It couldnt be more perfect."
"He also added 2 aquamarines which is my March birth stone at the sides and surrounded with what he calls the support crew- the diamonds," she concluded. "Its perfect. So, now I have a fiance."
