Man critically injured when Jet Ski explodes on Lake Norman
A man was critically injured after a Jet Ski exploded on Lake Norman on Tuesday.
The Jet Ski exploded at about 5:30 p.m. near Great Point Drive in Mooresville, Observer news partner WBTV reported. Great Point Drive is off Brawley School Road, just north of Trump National Golf Club Charlotte.
The 59-year-old man was taken to Lake Norman Regional Medical Center and later flown by helicopter to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, Iredell EMS told WBTV.
The skier was found unconscious and had "traumatic injuries," Charlotte NBC-TV affiliate WCNC reported, although a neighbor told WSOC-TV that the man was alert.
An official with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission told WBTV that the victim had just left a dock and was trying to crank the Jet Ski when it exploded. The man's son rescued him and took him to shore, the official told the station.
The man was wearing a life jacket, which made the rescue easier, WBTV reported.
The commission is investigating the cause of the explosion and has yet to release the man's name and injuries.
