How Lorrie kicked cancer without chemotherapy

Meet Lorrie.

She started routine mammograms at age 28, just because she could. Her diligence paid off in 2011 when her screening mammogram detected breast cancer at stage zero. No radiation. No chemotherapy. It’s a 2.5-year journey that Lorrie says changed her life forever — and continues today, as she reaches out to encourage others who are fighting the disease.

Earlier this year, a government task force (USPSTF) released updated breast cancer screening recommendations: Routine mammograms beginning at age 50 and continuing only every other year. Simply put, it means that insurance companies no longer have to cover screening mammograms for women in their 40s—or yearly mammograms for anyone. Period. And this could translate to 6,500 additional deaths each year.

What if Lorrie hadn’t been so diligent about her mammograms? What if she had only gone every other year?

“Nobody wants to find cancer. But had I not been diligent and had my mammograms yearly, then I wouldn’t still be standing here,” said Lorrie. “Big changes in my mammogram from just one year to the next. Had I not taken the time out to do the mammogram, I can only imagine the direction this would’ve gone. It would’ve been a longer road to come back from.”

October is breast cancer awareness month. Mammography is the only screening method that has consistently proven to reduce cancer deaths. Encourage all the women in your life to start an annual mammogram routine at age 40. Schedule a mammogram today at CharlotteRadiology.com or by calling 704.367.2232. Screening really does save.
