Charlotte’s top dining destinations: Good Food on Montford

The Chef: Chef Larry Schreiber

Chef Larry Schreiber has worked at all three of Bruce Moffett’s Charlotte restaurants. Schreiber credits Moffett with allowing him to experiment and find his own cooking style at each of the concepts. Like Moffett, Schreiber received his culinary training at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y. The two also worked in Boston together. Schreiber discovered a true interest and talent for cooking while working in a kitchen as a teenager. Chef Schreiber says he loves working at Good Food on Montford because he is able to try new things on a daily basis; he comes up with a daily “fresh catch” feature, depending on what the restaurant gets from the NC coast and local farms. Additionally, Schreiber changes the menu roughly every other month, depending on the tastes of the season and the ingredients available to him from nearby farms. But don’t worry; despite Chef Scheriber’s ever-evolving menu, the Steamed Bun, Korean Beef, and Green Curry Mussels won’t be going anywhere!

The Look: Simple and Intimate

Good Food on Montford has a beautiful minimalist décor, allowing the food and company around the table to shine. It has a bit of a retro feel, giving a nod to the era the structure was built, while keeping with modern design trends and elements. The restaurant features exposed brick, beautiful wood ceiling beams, a stainless steel bar, and funky light fixtures. The wall of windows along the front of the restaurant allows natural light to spill in. The space is small and inviting, and perfectly complements the impeccable tapas style menu. With small plates meant for sharing, Good Food on Montford is ideal for date nights, casual dinners, girls’ nights out, and everything in between. Don’t miss the chef’s bar in the back for extra seating and conversation with the talented kitchen staff.

The Dish: Green Curry Mussels

You will rarely see a table at Good Food on Montford that passes up the Green Curry Mussels. The bowl filled with Prince Edward Island mussels, cilantro, cream, and green curry, with naan for dipping, has been a staple on the menu since Bruce Moffett opened Good Food on Montford in 2009. Guests love dipping their naan (or, really, any bread left on the table) in the green curry cream. Good Food on Montford’s motto is that it is simple and unassuming, while also being innovative and up to date with the latest culinary trends. This motto perfectly encompasses the Green Curry Mussels, being that it uses few ingredients but is full of flavor.
