Gov. Pat McCrory reluctant to say more about House Bill 2

Gov. Pat McCrory declined to say much about the state’s controversial LGBT law Friday when asked about it during a budget news conference Friday.

McCrory was announcing highlights from his budget proposal Friday morning at the N.C. National Guard headquarters when he faced questions about new developments on House Bill 2.

“I think I’ve given plenty of comments on that question in videotapes and TV and radio interviews in the past three weeks, and my comments remain the same,” he said, responding to a question about the economic effects of the law. Several companies have announced that they won’t move forward with locating new jobs in the state, and 180 major companies have spoken out against the law.

McCrory was also asked about NBA Commissioner Adam Silver’s comments Thursday about the fate of the All-Star Game scheduled to happen in Charlotte next year. Silver said that “a change in the law is necessary for us to play in the kind of environment that we think is appropriate for a celebratory NBA event.”

The governor said he read a transcript of Silver’s remarks. “Those quotes are consistent with the dialogue I’ve had with them, so my previous comments remain the same with regard to them,” he said of the NBA.

McCrory did not elaborate further.
