‘Red Band Society’ on Fox is a keeper

Red Band Society (9pm, Fox) - The premiere of an engaging new dramedy set in a Los Angeles hospital’s pediatric ward, where teen patients deal with life-threatening illnesses and bond over their experiences. In tonight’s opener, Leo gets a new roommate, who is about to undergo a cancer surgery he knows all too well, and an insufferable cheerleader with a heart condition is shocked when she’s no longer the center of attention. The Roosevelts: An Intimate History (8pm, UNC-TV) - In part four of Ken Burns’ 14-hour documentary series, FDR runs for vice president in 1920 and while his ticket loses, his future appears bright. The next summer, however, a bout with polio leaves him paralyzed from the waist down. FDR re-enters politics in 1929 when he is elected governor of New York. He wins the presidential nomination for the Democrats in 1932. Other installments air over the next three nights, ending on Sept. 20.

America’s Got Talent (8pm, NBC) - The winning act is revealed in the Season 9 finale.

Unsung (8pm, TV One) - The season finale features the legendary soul vocal quartet The Chi-lites. They were four friends from the Windy City’s tough South Side who created a sound marked by tight harmonies and highlighted with eye-popping stage costumes.

The Mysteries of Laura (10pm, NBC) - In the series premiere of this comedy-drama, a New York City homicide detective, played by Debra Messing, struggles to balance her work life with her demanding home life, which includes horribly out-of-control twin boys and a husband, played by Josh Lucas, who won’t sign their divorce papers. Do you enjoy sociopathic children? Then you might like it. But I can’t really recommend it – except maybe as birth control. Here’s a more complete review of “The Mysteries of Laura.”

The Bridge (10pm, FX) - Sonya faces off with Eleanor, while Linder and Eva discuss their future.

Extant (10pm, CBS) - Season 1 ends with Molly returning to space to redirect the Seraphim away from Earth and protect the world from deadly spores. Meanwhile, John discovers that Odin’s plan puts Ethan in danger. Will this be renewed? Well, last week’s ratings hit a series low, so
