NBC 'Dateline' to air show on murder of former York mayor Roberts Friday
Another television special about the 2010 murder of former York Mayor Melvin Roberts is set to air at 8 p.m. Friday on NBC.
The episode of “Dateline” will focus on the killing of Roberts, the conviction of his longtime girlfriend, Julia Phillips, and how police and prosecutors and Roberts’ family believe an uncaught conspirator in the crime is still on the loose. Phillips, now 70, was convicted of accessory to murder in 2013, but law enforcement officials say that she did not act alone in the strangling of Roberts, 79. Phillips is serving life in prison.
The show is expected to include interviews with the Roberts family, as well as the police and lawyers who handled the Phillips trial in 2013.
Roberts’ sons, David and Ronnie Roberts, have offered a $10,000 reward through York County Crimestoppers for information that leads to an arrest and conviction of anyone else involved in the killing.
“There is someone else out there who killed our father,” David Roberts said. “Somebody out there has to know something. That’s why we offered the reward, so that people are reminded that this case is not solved. It is not over.”
After Phillips was arrested in the spring of 2010, police continued to say that investigators believed at least one other person was part of the plot to kill Roberts. Phillips, Roberts’ girlfriend for 10 years, was convicted after prosecutors showed that she had financial motive to kill Roberts after Roberts planned to cut her money off.
Investigators with the York Police Department are continuing to work the case, said Capt. Brian Trail and Detective Billy Mumaw, lead investigator in the case.
“We are still looking at every angle we can, and interviewing people,” Mumaw said.
Earlier this year, “Investigation Discovery” aired a special on the killing and trial.
