Meet the journalists
• J. Andrew Curliss, 41, has been a reporter and editor at The News & Observer since 1997. He has reported on a range of subjects for the paper, including rural North Carolina, state government and politics, and natural disasters.
Curliss has been a member of the newspaper’s investigative team since 2009; his reporting has been recognized with more than 30 national or statewide journalism awards. Next month, he will become the N&O’s state government and politics editor.
• Chuck Liddy, 60, has been a staff photographer for The N&O for 22 years. During a 40-year career, his work has been published in major magazines and newspapers around the world; he has won more than 100 journalism awards.
Liddy has covered a variety of assignments over the years, including dozens of hurricanes. He has spent extended time in the last decade covering the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. He was also sent to document relief efforts in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake.
• Patrick Davison, 54, is a professor of visual communication at the University of North Carolina and is currently on leave as a Fulbright Scholar to Japan. Over the course of Davison’s 25-year career, his work has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Pulitzer Prize in 2000 with the Rocky Mountain News photo staff.
