Charlotte Bilingual Preschool wins $20,000 from Seed20
Charlotte Bilingual Preschool is the people’s choice – the nonprofit that prepares Spanish-speaking children for kindergarten won $20,000 from Social Venture Partners.
Head of the preschool Joanne Stratton Tate was one of the Seed20 finalists who Tuesday night gave 3-minute presentations to about 600 people at Knight Theater. The audience voted for the grand prize winner.
The 10 nonprofits were vying for five awards totaling $55,000. Social Venture Partners is a worldwide network of philanthropists that promotes innovation and social entrepreneurs.
Stratton told the crowd Charlotte Bilingual Preschool needs to expand. It has 72 children in the program and 300 on its waiting list.
Other winners:
▪ Second Prize, $12,500 to Uncommen, a mobile app to help men be better men, husbands and fathers.
▪ Third Prize, $7,500 to Present Age Ministries, which fights sexual abuse and human trafficking of teenage girls.
▪ Coaches Award, $5,000 to F.R.E.E. Foundation, which gives used medical equipment to uninsured and underinsured people.
▪ Priceless Misc. Digital Impact Award, $10,000 in web design and services to A.C.E. Your Prostate Exam, a program that promotes prostate health for African-Americans.
Other finalists included A Widow’s Path, Charlotte Ballet Reach, Charlotte Food Innovation District, EmpowHERment, Girls Rock Charlotte, Joedance Film Festival and Youth Meditation.
