Trump Accepting DoorDash Sparks Waves of Jokes, Memes
President Donald Trump had McDonald's delivered to the Oval Office by a DoorDash driver as part of an effort to highlight a tax policy he believes boosts the income of U.S. workers who earn tips.
However, the staged publicity event was overshadowed by events 24 hours earlier, when Trump launched an attack on Pope Leo XIV in a Truth Social post and then posted an AI-generated image depicting himself as Jesus Christ, drawing a backlash as a result.
Though Trump deleted the post and went on to claim it was meant to depict him as a doctor, the videos and photos of Trump accepting the delivery sparked a wave of memes on social media poking fun at the event and the AI Jesus debacle.
Why It Matters
The president's approval rating slumped to an all-time-low earlier this month. Given the ongoing Iran war and public concern over the cost of living in the U.S., the DoorDash event represented an opportunity to highlight one way the Trump Administration is striving to put money back in the pockets of U.S. workers ahead of Tax Day on Wednesday-the deadline for individuals to submit federal income tax returns to the IRS.
Unfortunately, any potential goodwill generated by the tax policy has been overshadowed by the president's social-media activities. As a result, the Trump administration’s social-media posts, designed to highlight these efforts, have instead became a source and platform for further mockery.
What To Know
In a video posted to X by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, Trump can be seen receiving an order from Sharon Simmons, who is shown arriving at the exterior door to the Oval Office wearing a “DoorDash Grandma” T-shirt.
Writing alongside the 21-second clip of Trump receiving the order, Leavitt said: “Thanks to President Trump signing No Tax on Tips into law, Sharron is using the $11,000 in tips that she made last year to support her family.” The video has been watched over 4.7 million times, earning more than 11,000 shares and 10,000 comments. The White House also posted a photo of the delivery on X while another post featured a video of Simmons driving to deliver the food.
Unfortunately, the positive messaging behind the event appeared lost on many of those commenting on the video.
One user, @MakaveliMemez, a parody account that pokes fun at Trump and predecessor Joe Biden, created his own AI generated picture, based on Trump’s previous Jesus/Doctor image, that incorporated Simmons and McDonald’s into proceedings:
Another user, @BuroEGD, who also appears happy to mock Republicans and Democrats alike online, created their own version of Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” with Trump and a bag of McDonald’s front and center:
Another meme posted by Frankie Galik, a vocal critic of Trump online, meanwhile, featured an image of Trump receiving the DoorDash order dressed as the Pope:
Another user, @Jax27022235, who also appeared to be opposed to the Trump Administration, shared a Dr. Evil from the movie franchise “Austin Powers”-inspired meme suggesting the DoorDash event was designed as distraction from the fallout over the alleged Jesus image:
Elsewhere, another post, created by the anti-MAGA account @AutoethnoRage, depicted the president as McDonald’s mascot Ronald McDonald, handing over the food. @GlobalNewsCheck, an account with no clear political affiliation, also lampooned Trump in a similar way.
Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert Kennedy Jr.’s likely displeasure at seeing McDonald’s at the White House was also the focus of a couple of memes created @SamyUsa92, a user with no political affiliation and @lofthebeholdr, who also appeared happy to poke fun at politicians from either side of the divide.
One meme, created by @tyosooo, who appears to lean toward Democrat, meanwhile, saw Trump branded a “national embarrassment.” The fact the rising price of gas had likely reduced Simmons’s earnings as a DoorDash driver was not lost on those watching on social media either, with one post, created by Trump critic @NNTNNews, highlighting that.
Trump’s claim he was depicting himself as a doctor rather than Jesus also came in for ridicule from @wasnwrongpatty, another account opposed to the administration:
