Many dogs have a natural caretaking instinct and look out for those they consider vulnerable and in need of protection. Canines make wonderful therapy animals because of their compassionate spirit and often serve in hospitals, nursing homes, and schools to support and uplift others who may be physically or emotionally struggling. Sometimes our pooches just feel inclined to take on a parental role for young children or smaller animals. It's one of the countless reasons we love these fur babies.

Spud the Pit Bull took it upon himself to watch over his family's four baby chicks and he's totally embracing this fatherly role.

The day Spud became a dad to four baby chicks! So funny enough, as much as I tried to bond with the chicks, they have become pretty skittish of us. Yet when Spud is anywhere near them, they're perfectly fine. . Any time he hears them in any sort of distress (giant hand changing out their water,) Spud comes running from the next room! I never expected Spud to have this relationship with them, they're our new spring additions to our current flock. I wonder if they'll remember each other when they move outside. #dogtok#fy#babychicks#cuteanimals#animalsoftiktok

The TikTok from @spudsymutt showed how the relationship between the gentle giant and baby chicks evolved, starting from the day the chicks came home to live with Spud.

The little brood had their own large living enclosure with a heating lamp. Spud began looking in on them out of curiosity, which grew into more of a kinship.

"He started sitting with them every single day," the onscreen text explained.

Spud got more attached to these feathered friends as time went on. His dog bed was moved right near the chicks so he could be close by, and he often just watched them to make sure everything was ok. The Pittie's mom revealed that Spud is now the chicks' go-to guy.

"So funny enough, as much as I tried to bond with the chicks, they have become pretty skittish of us," the caption explained. "Yet when Spud is anywhere near them, they're perfectly fine."

Spud Is Always on Call

Regardless of where he is in the house, Spud always has an ear out for the baby chicks and drops everything at the slightest hint of trouble.

"Any time he hears them in any sort of distress (giant hand changing out their water,) Spud comes running from the next room!" the story continued. "I never expected Spud to have this relationship with them."

Followers praised the Pittie for his self-appointed dad role and found his connection to the chicks completely heartwarming.

"What an amazing caretaker," one remarked.

"Stepdads that really step up are awesome," another noted.

"What a proud daddy with his feathered babies," someone commented.

Spud is a natural at gentle parenting and a truly devoted dad.
