Artemis II Astronaut Shares an Emotional Reunion With Her Dog After Historic Space Mission
No humans have ever been as far away from Earth as the Artemis II astronauts were on their historic mission around the moon, but for astronaut, engineer, and dog mom Christina Koch, it was especially bittersweet. No one had ever been that far away from their dog before!
Although the iconic space flight lasted only 10 days, Koch and her rescue dog, Sadie, shared a joyful and emotional reunion that left millions of other pet parents misty-eyed. Even news outlets like Good Morning America are sharing the viral moment, and now millions of people have witnessed the unconditional love between an astronaut and her dog.

There's no question that Sadie knew exactly who was about to walk through the door. She couldn't help but sneak a peek when she heard someone coming, and her excitement only grew when her greatest wishes came true: Mom was home!
Sadie's wagging tail could've powered the Orion on another trip around the moon, but she won't be letting her mom out of her sight again anytime soon. Koch already set the record for the longest single space flight by a woman for a yearly near-long trip to the International Space Station in 2019 and 2020, so now it's Sadie's turn for some quality time.
Eagle-eyed fans noticed many similarities between this heartwarming video and the one Koch shared after returning from her previous space mission six years ago. Even though she'd been gone for nearly a year, Sadie-or LBD (that's Little Brown Dog) had no trouble recognizing her mama.
Dogs really do love their families unconditionally, and this is the perfect example. No matter how far away Christina travels, or how long she's away, she knows she has someone very important waiting for her at home. Oh, and her husband, too!
Reactions To the Reunion
Naturally, pet parents from across the globe were touched by this emotional reunion between a mom and her dog. One commenter wrote, "She loves that dog to the moon and back. Now, that's both figuratively and literally true! Another viewer put themselves in Sadie's shoes, writing, "Imagine the dog smelling smells from outer space!"
The most emotional comment of all came from @bylertothemoon, who imagined Sadie asking, "Hi Mom, did you see my friend Laika up there?" Pass the tissues, please! Laika was a stray Russian dog who was sent into space in 1957 with no way to return to Earth, and she's widely regarded as a martyr and the unofficial patron saint of one-way passages.
Christina Koch's love for dogs is just one more reason to adore her and everything she's done for women in science and astronomy as a whole. Sadie has no idea just how incredible her mom is!
