There's something about blue eyes on any creature, animal, or human that captures the attention.

And this Siberian cat named Don Dexter Jamon Serrano with blue eyes is no exception.

He looks like something out of a painting.

Those icy-blue eyes don't even look real in this one viral cat video.

And then to see the beautiful cat with those same eyes as a kitten is truly so amazing.

Why Blue Eyes in Cats Are So Rare

This mesmerizing cat video highlights just how rare blue eyes are in kitties.

The science behind these stunning, unusual blue eyes is a rare genetic combination that impacts the color and structure of the cat's irises.

We're not actually seeing blue pigment in the eye, but rather the light scattering off the iris producing the appearance of blue.

This is referred to as heterochromia in genetics and means one or both eyes have more than one color.

Both humans and animals can have heterochromia (actress Kate Bosworth has this beautiful condition).

When cats have blue eyes, it's because the irises lack melanin, allowing light to scatter and produce that striking blue appearance.

With rare blue eyes, the kitty has inherited two copies of the recessive gene from both parents that codes for this iris trait, lacking melanin.

For a little bit more science information, it's the OCA2 gene, which produces the pigment eumelanin, and variations in this gene, or rather the lack of it, resulting in blue eyes in cats.

Other genes that play an important role in feline eye color include the SLC24A4 and IRF4 genes.

What Makes Blue Eyes in Cats So Striking

Obviously, the science behind it is what makes blue eyes in kitties so rare and amazing, but it's also just a miracle of nature.

Certain breeds are known to carry these genes more, such as Siamese cats, the Balinese breed, and Ragdoll cats.

Dexter is so special for having these beautiful eyes!
