If the thought of dogs used in laboratories makes your skin crawl, you're not alone. Just the thought of animal testing is enough to make animal lovers rethink the products they choose, but dogs are still being bred for the purpose of being sold to labs, and many of them are Beagles.

There's a reason one question keeps surfacing whenever animal welfare stories make headlines: Why are Beagles used in animal testing? It's not random-and the answer is as unsettling as it is simple.

Why Are Beagles Used In Animal Testing

The reason why labs use Beagles is the same reason so many people love them: they are even-tempered, docile dogs. These scent hounds were originally bred to work alongside humans while hunting for rabbits and wild game, and decades of selective breeding have created gentle, easygoing companions.

Shannon Keith, the President and Founder of Beagle Freedom Project, recalls a significant moment after rescuing one of her first Beagles, named Bixby. Although she initially adored how he would offer his paw, information from someone at the lab where he was rescued revealed a more distressing truth about his past.

"She said, 'It's not cute,it's because he was taught to do that, to give his paw for blood.'" Fortunately, Bixby never had to give blood again, and more Beagles like him are finding their freedom every year.

The Ridglan Farms Rescue That Put Thousands of Beagles in the Spotlight

Animal welfare missions rarely make front-page news, but a massive clash between protestors and dog breeders at Ridglan Farms in Blue Mound, Wisconsin, has finally given animal rights the spotlight it deserves.

It began in March, when protestors entered the breeding facility and took 30 Beagles from their kennels. Ridglan Farms, which breeds Beagles for sale to laboratories, responded with a heavy police presence when over 1,000 protestors returned in April. Several activists were hospitalized after the standoff, when tear gas, rubber bullets, and physical force were all utilized.

Not long after, several rescue groups reached an agreement with Ridglan Farms, securing the release of 1,500 Beagles. Now, many of those rescue dogs are finally beginning the safe, loving lives they were always meant to have.

Rescues like this don't just change individual lives-they keep the conversation around animal welfare going, bringing us closer to a future where no Beagle, or any animal, is used for testing.
