Nicholas Brendon's Cause of Death & Health Issues Explained
New information has surfaced surrounding the death of Buffy the Vampire Slayer actor Nicholas Brendon, following his passing at the age of 54 on March 20 this year.
When his death was announced by his family two months ago, a statement shared by the actor's family revealed Brendon had "passed in his sleep of natural causes."
The statement, shared with The Hollywood Reporter, went on to reveal his death was unexpected, and Nicholas' health had been on a positive turn as of late, after decades of struggles with substance abuse and addiction. "While it's no secret that Nicholas had struggles in the past, he was on medications and treatment to manage his diagnosis," the statement continued. "He was optimistic about the future at the time of his passing."
This week, information from the actor's death certificate, obtained by Page Six, confirmed Brendon had died from "atherosclerotic and hypertensive cardiovascular disease," according to the coroner's ruling. The condition results from the damage high blood pressure has on the artery walls, accelerating plaque buildup and narrowing the natural blood flow of the area.
"Acute pneumonia and previous myocardial infarction" were also listed as contributing factors in the report by Putnam County's coroner, Todd Zeiner. The latter condition refers to a heart attack that the Buffy star suffered in 2022, which he had spoken about in recent years in discussions about his sobriety journey.
"Autopsy demonstrated an adult male with a markedly enlarged heart, severe stenosis of the right coronary artery, moderate stenosis of the left anterior descending and left circumflex arteries, acute pneumonia and inflammation of the small bowel," Zeiner concluded from his findings. "The small bowel inflammation is most likely secondary to ischemic changes related to the cardiogenic shock."
In the March 2026 statement provided to The Hollywood Reporter, the Buffy actor's family said he had "been optimistic about his recent outlook and attitude," and "had been hopeful that he'd finally turned a corner." The actor portrayed Xander Harris on the cult supernatural series from 1997 to 2003.
