A senior cat visited her old home for the first time, and her mom captured the serene moment.

In a TikTok video, the sweet cat named Lucille sat out in a meadow that she and her mom used to visit together. In the video, Lucille seemed to remember the place and moment, and she took time to take it all in. In the text overlay, Lucille's mom wrote that she "didn't expect to get so emotional bringing my senior cat back to where we grew up together."

In the caption, she noted that Lucille seemed to reflect on "old familiar places and smells" as she sat, looking out into the meadow.

"A lot of mixed emotions taking her back to a place that was filled with very painful memories," Lucille's mom continued in the caption. "But most of our memories together were in the forests and meadows, and so it was lovely to see her reaction to being back in her favorite nature spots."

The internet fell in love with the tender moment, with users commenting on how "emotional" it made them feel to see Lucille look so reflective and content, as if she were reminiscing about old memories. One commenter even wrote, "I wonder what she's thinking" as she sat out in the field.

"She looks very lost in her thoughts, bless her," one person wrote, while another said the moment "seems…healing almost? At least I hope it's that way."

"She didn't even move. She's just feeling the moment," another user wrote, while another added, "She's definitely reminiscing about the good old days of her with you there."

How much are cats able to remember?

Just like people, cats can hold onto memories, which can also affect their behavior in the long term.

According to PetMD, cats can remember things based on past experiences, like dogs and people. Several studies have been done to demonstrate a cat's short-term memory and that they have "spatial memory, as proven by their ability to remember what cups they had already eaten from when other half-eaten cups from other cats were present as well."

Studies have also shown that cats can hold onto memories as well as people. PetMD reports that "cats can hold on to memories for their lifetime-up to 15–20 years in some cases."

While more studies need to be conducted on a cat's memory, it's likely that their memories are tied to "a strong emotion," whether that's love, affection, or even trauma. These emotional responses and memories can affect how a cat behaves in the long term, eliciting certain reactions based on the memory.

A cat's memory can deteriorate as they get older, so feeding a vet-recommended diet and keeping them stimulated will help their physical health and long-term memory.
