Rebecca Yarros Just Dropped a Big ‘Fourth Wing’ Book 4 Hint
Rebecca Yarros is finally giving us some Fourth Wing 4 details! During her recent ApollyCon panel, the author teased several different things including its length and how book 5 will be impacted. Yarros also shared some details on what the highly anticipated unnamed book releasing in September will be about. Read on for more.
Rebecca Yarros spills on ‘Fourth Wing’ book 4
Ever since Onyx Storm released in January 2025, fans have been begging her for book 4 news. And while we still don’t know what it’s going to be called, when it’s going to be released or what it’s going to be about, we do finally know how long it’s going to be.
“It’s going to be on the heavier side, because I had to plot points between 4 and 5 to make sure that I can end in a five book series. So I want to make sure everything is working correctly there,” Yarros said at ApollyCon. “She’s gonna be on the curvier side.”
Currently, all of the Fourth Wing books are at least 500 pages. The longest one is Iron Flame, which is the second book in the series. That one was 640 pages and, according to Yarros, writing that book was what convinced her to expand the series from three installments to five.
“Probably about 30,000 words in, I called my editor and I said, ‘I think this is a five-book series,’ and that’s how we went from three to five,” the author told Variety in November 2023. “I’m a really thorough plotter and I plot every single chapter, every single scene and how each romantic arc and action arc moves and how each of the Easter eggs are put in. It comes to me as I’m staring at the plot board and looking at what is key.”
Another major change coming in book 4 is the expansion of its narrative perspectives. Previous installments in the Fourth Wing series have been told primarily through Violet Sorrengail’s point of view, with occasional chapters from her husband, Xaden Riorson—usually presented as bonus material. But according to what’s been revealed so far, that approach is set to change significantly in the next book.
“I have to remember that you all don’t know what I know,” Yarros said at a fan event last month. “I think you guys are going to get a Sloane chapter, so I’m most excited for that.”
For readers unfamiliar with the series, Sloane is the younger sister of Liam Mairi, Violet and Xaden’s late friend. When she was first introduced, she came across as guarded and resentful toward those around her.
‘Fourth Wing’ book 4 release date
As previously noted, Fourth Wing4 doesn’t have a release date, but Yarros did provide an update at ApollyCon as to why it’s taken her so long to write the novel.
“A lot of people think that I’m taking a year off, and I’m, like, ‘I’ve written two graphic novels, a contemporary novel and a surprise piece,’” the author said.
Speaking of the surprise project, Yarros shared a few more details about it during her panel appearance. Right now, many fans believe it could either be a full version of Major Afendra’s Guide to the Rider’s Quadrant (Unauthorized Edition) or possibly some kind of prequel novel. There is one thing, however, it will not be.
For those unfamiliar with the series’ lore, Major Afendra’s Guide to the Rider’s Quadrant (Unauthorized Edition) is a frequently referenced in-universe book from the Empyrean series. Essentially a handbook for dragon riders, it contains advice, observations and commentary about life within the Rider’s Quadrant at Basgiath War College, and has become something of a fan-favorite fictional text among readers.
“I heard this rumor that it was a cookbook. It’s not a cookbook,” Yarros said. “Aside from chocolate cake, food isn’t really that big of a part of the Empyrean World.”
