6 Golfers Abruptly Withdraw From Charles Schwab Challenge

The Charles Schwab Challenge tees off in the early hours of Thursday, May 28, but the field changes keep coming.

On Sunday, May 24, three golfers decided to withdraw from the tournament: Brooks Koepka, Denny McCarthy and David Ford all dropped out of the event and opened the door for Jimmy Stanger and Brice Garnett.

Koepka's withdrawal didn't open a position for a golfer to enter the tournament because he's on special status with the PGA Tour after coming back from LIV Golf. When he enters a tournament, the field is automatically expanded an extra two spots to ensure each group has three golfers.

Brooks Koepka, 5 Others Withdraw

The five-time major winner admitted earlier this season he wanted to play as much as possible.

"Every week is a new fresh start for me, and I'm obviously, with my penalty, I'm not allowed to play every event, and if I get the chance to tee up, I want to play," he said at the time before changing his mind after playing several tournaments in a row.

Wyndham Clark and Gordon Sargent also withdrew from the Charles Schwab Challenge, allowing Lanto Griffin and Ben Kohles to sneak into the event earlier this week.

But they weren't alone.

On Tuesday, Bud Cauley, who was a common pick from bettors to contend for the title, withdrew from the tournament and opened the door for Patrick Fishburn.

Who Is the Favorite to Win?

Ludvig Aberg, who has finished in the top eight in six of his last seven tournaments, enters as the clear betting favorite. His only missed top-10 in his last seven tournaments came when he tied for 21st at the Masters in April.

Since then, he's recorded a t-4 at the RBC Heritage, t-8 at the Truist Championship and a t-4 at the PGA Championship earlier this month.
